What we do:

UBS is a global financial services firm offering wealth management, investment banking, asset management and, in Switzerland, retail and commercial banking.

UBS recruits graduates from all academic backgrounds – the humanities and sciences, as well as economics and finance. Because of its global reach, the firm is particularly keen to hear from students with strong language skills. For UBS, degree subject is less important than a graduate’s ability to prove they can analyse problems, plan ahead, make decisions, demonstrate sound judgement and communicate with others. The other qualities UBS seeks in graduates are ambition, integrity, a commitment to accuracy and a desire to work collaboratively with other friendly but driven professionals.

UBS’s Graduate Training Program offers talented graduates continuous learning in a fast-paced but supportive environment. The program lays the foundation for a rewarding career in finance by combining intensive classroom education, coaching from more senior colleagues and on-the-job experience.

Our 9-week structured summer internships are aimed at penultimate year students; however UBS is happy to consider applications from final year students and those who have just graduated. Students who have graduated or apply in their final year are advised that any potential career opportunities secured through our internship program would commence in September 2015.

Our stories

Michal Lovas

What is your background and when did you attend Inside & Out?

I went to Cass Business School and received a BSc (Hons) in Banking and International Finance. I attended Inside & Out in 2012.

And where did you go from there?

I did a summer internship and subsequently joined a graduate scheme in J.P. Morgan Operations.

What is the most important thing you learnt from the event?

The diversity of thought in the LGBT community is its biggest strength. Attending the event allowed me to extend my network to draw on that pool of talents and opinions.

What advice would you give future attendees?

Get out of your comfort zone and be open-minded about who you meet. You will be surprised what interesting connections you can make this way, whether professional or personal.

Simon Pellas

What is your background and when did you attend Inside & Out?

I studied a BSc in Management at London School of Economics and Political Science, and I attended Inside & Out during my first year of university in 2011.

And where did you go from there?

I participated in various Spring Week internships including Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, Citi and PwC. I then went on to do a summer internship at Deutsche Bank within Corporate Finance, where I am currently employed as a graduate analyst.

What is the most important thing you learnt from the event?

I realised that I am not alone in being gay banking. It was very enlightening hearing senior bankers discuss their experiences, and most particularly how much the attitude towards LGBT has changed over the past few decades. This helps me appreciate how fortunate I am to be born in an area where I can comfortably be myself at work.

What advice would you give future attendees?

You can never know what is right for you before you have tried it, so anyone interested in banking I highly recommend participating in a Spring Week/Summer Internship or similar to get a flavour of the industry. I also think it is important to be yourself, because only if you’re genuine and comfortable in your own skin will you be able to make a lasting impression on other people. Finally, I would advise future attendees to realise the importance of networking/building a professional network early on, since this network very often helps you gets to the place where you want to end up.

Inside & Out is for 1st and 2nd year lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender undergraduates of all degree disciplines finishing studies in 2017 and 2018 with at least 300 UCAS points in your top 3 A Levels or equivalent.

Myths vs reality & FAQs

Many people assume that investment banking is predominantly white, male, middle class and heterosexual. That may have been true in the past, but it’s far from the case today. In fact, because the investment banking industry is an intensely performance-focused environment, people are judged very much on what they do, rather than where they come from or who they are. This makes for a surprisingly diverse workforce not just in terms of sexuality, but also in terms of gender, race and background.

Another common myth is that investment banking is a cutthroat, ruthless industry where individuals can expect very little support. This assumption doesn’t take into account that high performance requires respect and collaboration. The most important asset for an investment bank is the talent they have, so recognising diversity and fostering an inclusive culture is actually a business-critical issue for all banks.
